The most common treatment for musculoskeletal pain is Physical Therapy (PT). Used alone, or in combination with other interventional and non-surgical procedures, the goal of PT is to make daily tasks and activities easier and more comfortable. Our focus is on allowing joints to move freely, and on restoring strength, flexibility, motor skills, and balance. There are a variety of physical rehabilitation and treatment components to PT, and you will typically use a combination of them as part of your individualized care plan.
We often begin Physical Therapy as early as your first visit. Loose, comfortable clothing is appropriate – exercise clothing is fine, but not necessary. A typical Physical Therapy session lasts 30 to 60 minutes. You may begin with treatments such as heat, electrical stimulation or ultrasound and then move on to stretching and strengthening exercises. As your condition improves, your therapy plan will adjust accordingly.
Some Physical Therapy sessions may leave you with slight muscle fatigue or soreness, especially as you first begin your treatment plan. However, for the most part, you will be able to resume normal activities following PT. Risks and side effects are almost non-existent, and we will discuss any concerns you may have prior to treatment.
